The Morocco national football team kept their FIFA World Cup dream alive in dramatic fashion, overcoming the Netherlands national football team 3-2 in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout after an enthralling 1-1 draw in Monterrey.
Just when the Dutch looked destined for victory following Cody Gakpo’s emotional second-half strike, the Atlas Lions produced a stoppage-time equaliser before holding their nerve from the spot to secure a memorable place in the Round of 16 and continue their remarkable World Cup journey.
The Atlas Lions dominated much of the contest but were repeatedly denied by Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and the woodwork. The Netherlands appeared to be heading for victory when Cody Gakpo fired home in the 72nd minute after a swift counterattack.
Gakpo’s goal carried extra emotion after the Liverpool forward recently revealed the heartbreaking loss of his unborn son. Despite the personal tragedy, he chose to remain with the Dutch squad and started the match.
Morocco refused to give up, with Issa Diop heading home a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to force extra time.
Neither side could find a winner in the additional 30 minutes, although Verbruggen produced one of the saves of the tournament to deny substitute Soufiane Rahimi.
The match was ultimately decided in a penalty shootout, where the Netherlands missed three spot-kicks. Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty to seal a 3-2 shootout victory and send Morocco into the last 16, where they will face Canada national football team in Houston.
The victory marks another significant milestone for Morocco, who became the first African nation to reach the knockout stages of the tournament. Ranked sixth in the world, the Atlas Lions showcased the quality that took them to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar, with stars such as Achraf Hakimi, Saibari and Brahim Díaz leading the way.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has continued his impressive start in charge, guiding Morocco into the knockout rounds less than four months after taking over the national team.
Defender Noussair Mazraoui praised his team’s resilience after the match, saying: “We are going to stay humble because that is why we are here. Without the fighting spirit we showed, you are not going to win any game.”
With confidence growing and momentum on their side, Morocco will now look to continue their impressive World Cup campaign as they chase another deep run on football’s biggest stage.
