Africa’s booming gaming industry has received a major boost after Google Play announced a $1 million (about KSh129 million) Indie Games Fund aimed at helping independent game developers transform their ideas into globally successful titles.

The inaugural fund, which targets developers across 32 African countries, including Kenya, will provide equity-free funding, technical support and industry mentorship to emerging studios looking to scale their businesses and reach millions of players worldwide.

The initiative reflects Google’s growing investment in Africa’s digital economy and creative industries, where game development is rapidly emerging as one of the continent’s most promising technology sectors.

Google Targets Africa’s Rising Gaming Talent

Despite Africa’s reputation for rich storytelling and creative innovation, many independent game studios struggle to access the funding needed to commercialise their ideas.

Google says the new Indie Games Fund is designed to bridge that gap by giving promising developers both financial backing and access to global expertise.

“Africa’s unique creativity has fuelled a vibrant game development scene,” said Ben McOwen Wilson, Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Google Play.

“Bringing this fund to the continent underscores our commitment to unlocking the immense talent of local studios, providing the resources needed to scale businesses, refine creative visions, and share uniquely African stories with a global audience.”.

Successful Studios to Receive Up to $200,000

Under the programme, selected developers will receive a combination of funding and technical assistance designed to accelerate game development and commercial success.

Successful applicants will benefit from:

Equity-free funding ranging from $50,000 to $200,000 per studio.

Hands-on mentorship from experienced gaming industry professionals.

Technical support to improve game performance, optimise development frameworks and increase visibility on Google Play.

In total, 10 independent studios will be selected for the programme.

For Kenyan developers, the initiative presents an opportunity to secure funding, refine their products and showcase African stories to a global audience through one of the world’s largest app distribution platforms.

As Africa’s gaming industry continues to grow, initiatives such as the Google Play Indie Games Fund are expected to help local studios compete internationally while creating jobs, driving innovation and strengthening the continent’s creative economy.
